Talk from National Instruments' James Truchard:Preparing Students for 21st-Century Design Challenges
Start Date: 11/21/2013Start Time: 6:00 PM
End Date: 11/21/2013End Time: 7:00 PM
Event Description
Systems - such as smartphones and medical systems - are ubiquitous in the world today, helping to improve everyday life and solve the grand challenges of our times. Students need to prepare for 21st-century design and verification of these systems, which incorporate essential elements of engineering to function properly - everything from cyber-physical systems and RF/wireless and transportation to healthcare and energy. Engineers must take innovative approaches using emerging technologies. Dr. Truchard will give his views and discuss his approach.

Students enrolled in the Engineering Leadership Program may include this event as a leadership seminar in their leadership portfolio.

As one of Forbes’ America’s Favorite Bosses, Dr. James Truchard - commonly known around National Instruments as Dr. T - led the company from a three-man team to a multinational organization of more than 7,000, and maintains an entrepreneurial mindset in the company. Under Truchard’s leadership, NI has pioneered virtual instrumentation software and hardware that revolutionizes the way engineers and scientists develop measurement and automation applications. Truchard also is an active supporter of academic efforts including hands-on, project-based learning.  Before founding NI, Truchard led the acoustical measurements division at the Applied Research Laboratories at the University of Texas at Austin. Truchard holds a PhD in electrical engineering, as well as master’s and bachelor’s degrees in physics, from the University of Texas at Austin.
