Department of Art & Art History's Visiting Artist Program: Millie Chen

End Date: 9/19/2017End Time: 7:30 PM
Event Description:

"by any means necessary" - a lecture by Millie Chen

What is the capacity of aesthetics to convey conflict and trauma? This question drives my practice. Although this sounds like a cerebral question about the hazards of vision, it comes from visceral distress produced by endless stream of human injustices and atrocities. I utilize the subversive capacity of image-making along with non-visual elements like sound, scent and participatory modes of working to interrupt habits of viewing. It is the question that underlies my commitment to a practice that is as much social as it is artistic.

This lecture is part of the Visiting Artist Program, a vital component of the Department of Art and Art History since 1972 which is one of the oldest programs of its kind. Each year, a diverse group of 8-10 nationally and internationally recognized artists are invited to CU to present their work and ideas to a large audience of students, faculty, and community members.
