Learning Environments that Instigate Change in Students' and Faculty Ideas, Practices, and Identities

Abstract:  I will present a learning theory that guides the design of learning environments that instigate change. Then, I will provide data to support claims about educational change associated with the learning environments I have collaboratively created. These learning environments include the Colorado Learning Assistant Model, the Streamline to Mastery and Teacher Research Teams models, and the Physics and Everyday Thinking classroom environment. In each of these learning contexts, participants engage in specific cultural practices (from evidence-based instruction to scientific induction) and then induce principles about these practices through explicit reflection that is built into the learning context design. The theoretical perspective I present also demonstrates how identity and agency are developed through practice and I will discuss how such a model has sustainability built into the design. I will also support claims about scaling of evidence-based instructional practices in University and K12 contexts.
