Presented by Boulder’s Frequent Flyers Aerial Dance company, MAPPING will explore socio-political issues surrounding genetic mapping using interactive fluid-simulation graphics technology and outstanding aerial dance.

About Frequent Flyers, the Colorado Daily said, "one of the most unique and stunningly beautiful dance/theater experiences around."

The show’s interactive graphics will simulate the flow of liquids in its various forms. Projected floor to ceiling on screens that surround the audience, the fluid graphics will serve as backgrounds for the aerial dancers and the audience in an immersive, animated environment.

Infrared cameras will track the movements of the dancers who will be able to “stir” and  change the flow of the liquid graphics swirling around themselves. In real time, audiences will experience a visual conversation between the aerial artists and the ever-changing, whirling liquid graphics.

About the interactive fluid graphics:

“The fluid simulation is extremely flexible with numerous parameters that can be adjusted during the performance. Dance movements can affect the response of the fluid simulation (viscosity, for example). Other settings can affect how the fluid is visualized – color or black and white, particles or lines, etc.” –  Andrew Johnston, artist and graphics technologist, co-director, Creativity and Cognition Studios, School of Software, Faculty of Engineering and IT University of Technology, Sydney

The team creating this work:

- David Clarkson of the Stalker Theatre, Australia, has been a part of the International Aerial Dance Festival since its 1999 beginning.

- Andrew Johnston of the University of Technology, Sydney, is producing the animated interactive fluid simulation graphics.

- Boulder’s Frequent Flyers Aerial Dance company members will perform on various aerial devices and interact with the graphics.

- Nancy E. Smith, founder & artistic director of Frequent Flyers Aerial Dance will collaborate on the planning, concept and choreography.
