 George Crumb at 80 Music Festival (Multi-Day Event)

Pulitzer Prize winner George Crumb is an American icon in music.  Since he began his career at CU years ago, Mr. Crumb he has influenced a whole generation of composers and performers including Christopher Rouse and Jennifer Higdon.  Curated by Crumb expert and Associate Dean Steven Bruns, this festival will highlight the Colorado premiere of Songs from a Forgotten World and Sun and Shadow, and the world premiere of The Ghosts of Alhambra.

The artist roster brings together some of the most respected Crumb performers, Crumb scholars, and composers who have been impacted by his work, along with faculty artists from CU and five other major Colorado music institutions.  Crumb specialists include singer Ann Crumb, piano duo Quattro Mani, and guitarist David Starobin.  Mr. Crumb will interact with students and audience members through a public student masterclass, a panel discussion, a Composition Seminar, and more.   In addition, a video of scores and related images will be shown on the Atlas Video Wall throughout the festival. 
 
On October 2, CU Presents will also feature the Kronos Quartet performing Crumb’s Black Angels, as part of their residency.

 Magic Squares, A Video Art Installation by Jim Johnson

Magic Squares, a video art installation created by former chair of CU's Department of Art and Art History, Jim Johnson, can be seen on the video wall in the lobby of the ATLAS building from August 24 to September 27.
 Navajo Weaving: Diamonds, Dreams, Landscapes

In May of 2009, the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History will open a new exhibition entitled Navajo Weaving: Diamonds, Dreams, Landscapes. Presented in three iterations of 20-30 Navajo textiles each, the exhibit will showcase the breadth and depth of the Museum's Joe Ben Wheat Southwestern Textile Collection, considered to be one of the world's best collections of Navajo textiles.

A full slate of public and school programming will accompany the exhibit, including a grand opening event; hands-on workshops for adults, parents and children; guided tours; movie showings featuring movies with Navajo directors, producers, and actors; and programs and demonstrations on natural dyes and textile conservation. Judy M. Newland, Faculty Associate and Exhibit Developer at the Arizona State University Museum of Anthropology is the Guest Curator for the exhibition.
 Weaving Memory: Monotypes by Melanie Yazzie

Artist Melanie Yazzie's prints are inspired by the textiles from the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History's Joe Ben Wheat Collection and by memories from Yazzie's childhood with her grandmother Thelma Baldwin, a weaver in Wide Ruins, Arizona.
 Americans In a Changing China: 1920-2008

CU alumna Lelia Hinkley graduated in 1915 and arrived in Peking, China in 1921 to work as the secretary of the national board of the YWCA.
 
Hinkley’s remarkable stories, told through her photos, collection of exquisite textiles and impeccably detailed letters, are part of the temporary exhibit at the CU Heritage Center on display through June, 2010.

 Evacuation and Escape of Soviet Jews During World War II

Bring a brown bag lunch and join Anna Shternshis, professor of History at the University of Toronto and author of Soviet and Kosher: Jewish Popular Culture in the Soviet Union, 1923-1939, for a lunch and learn presentation of her recent research on Soviet Jews during WWII. This lecture examines wartime activities of Jewish culture makers to suggest that Jewish nationalism in the Soviet Union during WWII was a form of radicalism.

Happy 80th Birthday, George Crumb!
 
CU kicks off the Pulitzer Prize winning composer's week-long residency with his American Songbook V, Songs from a Forgotten World, featuring CU-Boulder faculty Patrick Mason, Julie Simson, Allan McMurray, Hsing-ay Hsu, and guest percussionists from the Colorado Symphony Orchestra.  David Korevaar opens the program with piano solo Eine Kleine Mitternachtmusik. At 6:30 p.m., Professor Thomas Riis and the AMRC present a pre-concert talk about the songbook folk songs in their original forms.  The unforgettable evening concludes with a post-concert birthday toast.
