Event Description:
THE WORLD IN OUR BACKYARD: Featuring ethnomusicologist and composer Dr. Brenda M. Romero and special guests ethnomusicologist and performer Dr. Jay Keister and Mami Itasaka Keister, a Japanese dance specialist formally known as Miko Bando. Romero will begin with a brief lecture recital on early New Mexican folk songs on voice and guitar. This will be followed by two short Japanese pieces featuring Keister and Miko Bando. The concert will end with a brief sampling of Romero’s formal compositions, including a woodwind quintet, Native Winds, commissioned by the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian in Santa Fe, N.M. for the New Mexico Woodwind Quintet in 1987, in celebration of the museum’s 50th anniversary.
