ATLAS Speaker Series: "Education Technology Today: Radical Ideas in Practical Times"
Start Date: 9/30/2013Start Time: 4:00 PM
End Date: 9/30/2013End Time: 5:00 PM
Event Description
Idit Caperton, who is an ATLAS Advisory Board member and founding funder of the ATLAS Speaker Series, is a pioneer in using new media technology for learning, innovation and globalization through constructionist learning theory. She conducted breakthrough research at the MIT Media Lab that led to publishing the book Constructionism with Seymour Papert. Caperton is the founder of the World Wide Workshop, which is a global non-profit, developing platforms that combine game mechanics and social networking for learning.
She will review recent far-reaching ed tech ideas, such as Sugata Mitra's School-in-the-Cloud and Nicholas Negroponte's One-Laptop-per-Child. She will posit how scalable technologies and programs that work within the school system may be today's only promising route toward immediate change to support college-ready, career-ready, innovation-ready citizens – young and old.

The ATLAS Speaker Series, which is made possible by a generous donation by Idit Harel Caperton and Anat Harel, hosts distinguished visitors from academia, industry and the arts as part of the ATLAS Institute’s mission to explore information and communication technologies and their effect on society.

The series is an educational and experiential resource for students, faculty and the larger community to discuss the challenges, opportunities and innovative applications of technology. Talks usually run from 4-5 p.m. in the Cofrin Auditorium, ground floor, ATLAS 100 (enter from lobby), unless otherwise noted.
