Birth of the Cool
In 1949, a nine-piece jazz ensemble recorded 12 selections that were to prove to be significant to the development of the “cool” style of jazz. The music and performers sought to explore a very different style than the prevailing one of Bebop. The music emphasized arrangements rather than soloists, and members of the Mile Davis-led group preferred sounds that were warmer and more melodic than their bop contemporaries. When the individual recordings were released as an album titled “The Birth of the Cool,” the new style took hold of the nation. Many members of the Miles Davis ensemble went on to have influential careers of their own, including Gerry Mulligan, John Lewis, Lee Konitz, J.J. Johnson, among others. Join us for an evening of cool jazz when these original arrangements and compositions will be performed by CU Jazz Faculty.

As a community, we have the opportunity to make a difference. In this 60 minute training, you can easily learn a way of intervening. QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer. Like CPR, QPR is an emergency response to someone in a suicide crisis. Also like CPR in the Chain of Survival from a life threatening medical crisis, early recognition of warning signs, early intervention and early professional assessment and care can save lives. Hope begins with you.

On these multicore systems, developers must find and exploit parallelism. For many applications, however, finding parallelism is difficult, and exploiting it even more so. This talk will look at a range of work that aims to help software developers scale performance on multicore systems. The work ranges from tools to help visualize potential parallelism in existing programs to software techniques to make new types of parallelism profitable on mutlicore systems. The talk will also briefly cover some work to address shortcomings in multicore systems that are difficult to compensate for in software.
