Crucial Conversations
8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Consider these questions:

Does your department suffer from taboo topics, deference, disagreement, analysis paralysis, information hoarding, office politics, or alienation?  Is your department battling slow productivity or low morale? Are you a supervisor who struggles with having difficult conversations with employees?  Then you, your team, or your department needs Crucial Conversations training.

Crucial Conversations is a two-day course that teaches skills for creating alignment and agreement by fostering open dialogue around high-stakes, emotional, or risky topics – at all levels of the organization.  By learning how to speak and be heard (and encouraging others to do the same), you’ll surface the best ideas, make the highest-quality decisions, and then act on your decisions with unity and commitment.

The CU Boulder Department of Human Resources has teamed up with VitalSmarts to offer this important course to CU Boulder employees. Based on the national best-selling book Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking when the Stakes are High, the Crucial Conversations course teaches participants to speak persuasively, not abrasively; foster teamwork and better decision making; build acceptance rather than resistance; and resolve individual and group disagreements. See the attached document for a detailed description of the course.

Who Should Attend: Crucial Conversations training is appropriate for employees at all levels of the organization. Supervisors, managers, and executive leaders will find the course to be particularly relevant to their work.

Cost: $210 (The course fee includes a Crucial Conversations Toolkit, cue cards for each lesson, a Crucial Conversations model card, a copy of the New York Times bestselling book, Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High, the Crucial Conversations audio companion MP3 download, and a course completion certificate).

(If you were to take this course directly from VitalSmarts, the cost would be $1,395. But because we have certified CU Boulder trainers to deliver the course, we are able to offer it to CU Boulder employees for $210! Don’t miss this opportunity to receive this incredible training that is transforming organizations around the country!)

Exhibit Closing: Native American Geographies Exhibit at Earth Sciences & Map Library
8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

The Jerry Crail Johnson Earth Sciences & Map Library at the University of Colorado Boulder will host a new exhibition highlighting art and maps that addresses the history of Indigenous peoples’ lands in the United States. It will be on display May 1 through Aug. 4, 2017.

The exhibit centers around Heart Mapping, a series of mixed media works on paper by Melanie Yazzie, CU Professor of Art and Art History and head of printmaking. Yazzie’s work evokes the American landscape as seen from above, in order to honor the vast breadth of Native homelands lost to Euro-American settlement.

In addition, the exhibit focuses on the difficulty of accurately mapping lands that were coercively transferred over time, and whose boundaries are still disputed. Maps of Indigenous peoples’ distribution throughout the history of North America, detailed turn-of-the-century reservation maps, educational maps by Native American publishers, and tourist maps, offer a thought-provoking informational complement to Yazzie’s artwork.

Guest essayist Sarah Krakoff, Raphael J. Moses Professor of Law at University of Colorado Law School, offers historical context to government-published maps in the exhibit, as well as commentary on the current state of Indian Land law.

Event Image Climate Change in Our Backyard: Fracking on the Front Range
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Boulder County's first oil well was drilled and produced in 1901. In the Boulder Oil Field, the McKenzie Well operated from 1902 to 2005, becoming one of the longest operated commercial oil and gas wells in the nation. The first use of timed explosives in oil wells to enhance production, which led to the modern version of fracking, were developed in the Boulder Oil field in the 1920's. Now Boulder County's oil and gas moratorium has come to an end and fracking will return in 2017.

Western, industrialized civilization has been reliant on fossil fuels like oil and natural gas for the past century, but at what costs? Where does the fossil fuels below the Front Range come from and how is it accessed? What is hydraulic fracturing, and what risks could it pose to the water, soil, and air resources of the state? What are the prospects of Colorado's energy future? We'll be hoping to answer these questions and more with data from academic, government, and industry researchers in "Fracking the Front Range."

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, two bewildered schoolmates sent to pull Prince Hamlet out of a descent into madness, grapple with fate, free will and the game of life. CSF’s production brings its full "Hamlet" cast on stage to inhabit Stoppard’s ingenious parallel universe of wit and wisdom.
Event Image Julius Caesar: By William Shakespeare
8:00 PM - 11:00 PM

What makes a true leader? In the republic of ancient Rome, no one seems to know. As Rome’s leader basks in his victory and ignores a series of bad omens, jealous critics conspire to topple his regime—only to find later that their efforts were for naught. Lies, scheming and scandal meet in a spellbinding political thriller that seems all too familiar in today’s polarized times.

Exhibit Closing: "Broadcast Generation"
All Day

This is the third iteration of poster exhibits produced by students in conjunction with instructor Petger Schaberg (coordinator of digital literacies in the Program for Writing and Rhetoric) and Andrew Violet (graphic designer for the University Libraries). It is at once the product of a creative assignment and a kind of generational sounding.

Since the first class installed their posters in 2013, subsequent classes have responded to the work of previous classes. Each year has seen a profound increase in design and rhetorical proficiency even as the formal parameters of the assignment have remained largely constant. The indications are that students themselves have engaged in a kind of iterative dialog, taking the project forward beyond the original intention of the instructor. The title, Broadcast Generation, is a student-generated identity uncovered for the first time in this iteration of the exhibit.

Making Room for Reality in STEM Recitations, Labs, and Classes
Janet Y. Tsai, Instructor, Engineering Plus Program, CU Boulder

STEM coursework traditionally demands focus on technical content over social and cultural contexts. While a STEM classroom can be a safe haven for students and educators alike who wish to escape from the (de)pressing realities of everyday life, artificially isolating our academic activities from the rest of the world proves to be a disservice to undergraduate preparation. This Fall Intensive workshop will: (1) encourage individual reflection on your personal experiences, assumptions, and embedded expectations of learning your STEM field; (2) provide concrete strategies for acknowledging and incorporating current events, social and cultural issues in your class; (3) motivate critical perspectives to question discipline-specific traditions of STEM learning; (4) connect to supporting research including concepts of social justice, depoliticization, and meritocracy.
