In this course students will explore the basics of solar energy and solar electric systems for homes, farms, and businesses.
After course completion, students will be able to: Understand the basics of electricity, Discuss solar energy and sun movement, Understand how solar cells work, Identify types of photovoltaic (PV) modules, Identify types of solar electric systems, Assess electrical demand in new and existing buildings, Determine the solar resource, Optimize the performance of a solar electric system, Explain mounting options, Identify key system components, Determine economics of PV systems, Discuss net metering, Understand financial incentives.
This is a SELF-PACED, Online course of self-study. Enrolled students have 6 months to complete the course. Final exam of 80% or greater is required for credit towards the Professional Certificate.

It will provide both a rich environment for students to delve into these interdisciplinary topics and a synergistic forum for leading researchers to interact in an in-depth and productive way.
The workshop lectures will be held in an interactive style that encourages the synthesis of ideas by the students. Techniques of active learning and peer instruction will be utilized to maximize participation in all discussions.

The exhibit the invisible connectedness of things created by internationally recognized visual artist Kim Abeles and co-presented by the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History and EcoArts Connections will be on display Tuesday Jan. 17 – Monday Oct. 1, 2012.
The exhibit is inspired by the spectacular structure, colors and longevity of lichens and the fact that they are bio-monitors of pollution. With a 16’ video wall, photos, paintings, puzzles, sculpture, “smog collector" plates and more, the exhibit explores the effects that transportation choices have on Boulder’s air quality. The project has been created in collaboration with atmospheric scientists, emissions specialists, lichenologists, transportation professionals and middle school students, among others. This exhibit is commissioned by EcoArts Connections (EAC) and co-presented by the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History and EAC in collaboration with Envirotest - Air Care Colorado, Manhattan Middle School and Spark: UCAR Science Education. |

Kambiz Khalili has 26 years of experience serving in higher education in the state of Colorado, culminating in his current position as Interim Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Executive Director of Housing & Dining Services. Recent projects completed in this role include the Center for Community Dining Center and the Williams Village North residence hall, both of which have received LEED Platinum ratings. He has also been responsible for overseeing the University Memorial Center and the Environmental Center concurrent to his leadership role in Housing and Dining Services. In the past, he has worked extensively in the Housing and Dining Services department at the University of Colorado Boulder in administrative positions. Prior to his tenure on the CU-Boulder campus, he worked at the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley for 15 years, concluding with his position as Director of University Housing & Dining Services.
Khalili earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from the University of Northern Colorado as well as a Master of Business Administration from Colorado State University. In addition to his extensive experience in Housing and Dining Services, he has presented at both regional and national SCUP conferences, as well as NACUFS, ACUHO-I, and NACAS national conferences, and has received the Northern Colorado Dietetic Association’s Award of Excellence for the promotion of good health and nutrition. |

She has served in various internal audit, budget and finance positions across the University. Most recently she served as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Budget and Operations at the University of Colorado Denver where she created and led the Emergency Preparedness Operations Group, and participated in capital budgeting and planning for new buildings at the CU Anschutz Medical Campus.
Vale has a master's degree in management from the University of Colorado Denver and a bachelor's degree in comprehensive business management from the University of Nebraska-Kearney. She also is a Certified Fraud Examiner. |

One of the most exciting and ambitious NASA missions will land on Mars on August 5th at 11pm MST. The timing of Curiosity’s landing is much too late for many of us. Fiske Planetarium will be offering a FREE public event on Monday, August 6th, at 7pm. This program will feature a talk by CU scientist Dr. David Brain and the debut of some of the first images to be taken by this mars rover. Curiosity is the largest unmanned rover ever sent beyond Earth. It is roughly the size of a Volkswagen Bug and weighs about a ton. Many dub this as the SUV of rovers. Curiosity will land in Gale crater. This crater will offer a wide variety of terrain and geology for the rover to investigate. The goal of the Curiosity rover is to continue the search for water and the signs that Mars may have had environments suitable for life.

The exhibit the invisible connectedness of things created by internationally recognized visual artist Kim Abeles and co-presented by the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History and EcoArts Connections will be on display Tuesday Jan. 17 – Monday Oct. 1, 2012.
The exhibit is inspired by the spectacular structure, colors and longevity of lichens and the fact that they are bio-monitors of pollution. With a 16’ video wall, photos, paintings, puzzles, sculpture, “smog collector" plates and more, the exhibit explores the effects that transportation choices have on Boulder’s air quality. The project has been created in collaboration with atmospheric scientists, emissions specialists, lichenologists, transportation professionals and middle school students, among others. This exhibit is commissioned by EcoArts Connections (EAC) and co-presented by the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History and EAC in collaboration with Envirotest - Air Care Colorado, Manhattan Middle School and Spark: UCAR Science Education. |

We'll meet some other farmers and community leaders who are working to build a local, vibrant economy in Boulder around food.
