Dr. Peter Van Arsdale presents “A Theory of Obligation”

Event Description
Dr. Peter Van Arsdale (University of Denver) will be hosted by the department of anthropology this Friday, April 5th for a public talk in Hale 230 at 4:00 PM titled, “A Theory of Obligation,” in which he outlines an expansive argument for humanitarian intervention, especially in relation to water access, refugee rights, mental health, and the military/civilian interface. His talk will be followed by a short reception with snacks and a dinner in town. The department will also host a catered lunch in Hale 450 from 12:30-2:00 PM to discuss a recent article of his with faculty and graduate students. Van Arsdale received his PhD from our department in 1975, has authored 6 books, and was the recipient of the Omer Stewart Memorial Award for exemplary service to applied anthropology. His arguments are grounded in four decades of research within and beyond the academy, which has taken him to New Guinea/Papua, Indonesia, East Timor, Sudan, Ethiopia, Peru, Guyana, El Salvador, Bosnia, Romania, Israel, and Palestine.
