11:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Home: American photography at the CU Art Museum
March 2 - July 15, 2017

Is home “where the heart is”? Is it a building, a landscape or a state of mind? Drawn from the photography collection of the CU Art Museum, Home investigates how American photographers working from the late 1800s to today have engaged with these questions. Through a presentation of landscapes, family photos and candid portraits visitors are invited to consider central themes of the exhibition, including environment, nostalgia and family.

What does home mean to you?
We invite our guests to respond to the images and ideas presented in the exhibition by visiting a special programming space in our FlexSpace gallery, open from February 2, 2017–March 25, 2017.

This exhibition is generously supported by CU-Boulder Student Arts and Cultural Enrichment fees, and CU Art Museum members.

Technical Lecture presented by Dr. Kip Thorne
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Title: "Geometrodynamics: Exploring the nonlinear dynamics of curved spacetime via computer simulations and gravitational wave observations"
Location: JILA Auditorium

Abstract: A half century ago, John Wheeler challenged his students and colleagues to explore Geometrodynamics: the nonlinear dynamics of curved spacetime. How does the curvature of spacetime behave when roiled in a storm, like like a storm at sea with crashing waves. We tried to explore this, and failed.  Success eluded us until two new tools became available: computer simulations, and gravitational wave observations. Kip will describe what these
have begun to teach us, and he will offer a vision for the future of Geometrodynamics.

APPM Department Colloquium - Jed Brown
3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Jed Brown, Department of Computer Science, University of Colorado Boulder
On nonlinear adaptivity with heterogeneity
Conventional adaptive methods depend on the solution being smooth in
much of the domain, such that coarse grids provide adequate resolution
everywhere but in some localized areas that require higher resolution.
Heterogeneity impedes standard adaptive techniques because it is not
possible to have accurate solutions without resolving the heterogeneity.
We present an adaptive method that can be viewed as a nonlinear
multigrid or domain decomposition scheme in which fine levels resolve
the heterogeneity but are rarely visited in most of the domain during
the nonlinear solution process. This requires judicious use of overlap
similar to the highly parallel segmental refinement methods of Adams et
al (2016) and related to admissibility criteria for fast integral
methods. We will compare and contrast our method with other nonlinear
multilevel domain decomposition methods such as ASPIN.

Event Image Resonant
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

What happens when we break down the barriers between differing perspectives?  Will we hear the world in a different light?  This multimedia exploration of resonance questions what we are capable of achieving when we explore one concept through the multiple lenses of physics, psychology, art, and music.  Through immersive visual projections and 360-degree audio installations, this new way of theatrical expression questions the struggles we face when attempting to integrate and accept the differing viewpoints and perspectives our world provides.

Real Change: The Thrilling Science of Neuroplasticity and How We Can Use It
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

The human adult brain was once believed by neuroscientists to be “fixed, ended, immutable,” but recent advances have revealed this three-pound organ to be remarkably dynamic. This means that where and how we spend time, who we relate to, and what we practice truly matters. It shapes our brain! This workshop will cover contemporary brain science, including research the presenter contributed to during her time at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. The audience will also have opportunities to explore key questions raised by the science of neuroplasticity: What Mam I practicing? Are there practices I would like to give up? Begin? The presentation will end with examples of practices that create change from the inside out.

Presented by Christina Congleton M.Ed.

Christina is a leadership and human development specialist, consulting to individuals and organizations interested in “next generation” leadership capacities such as mindfulness, emotional agility, and adult developmental psychology. Christina holds a master’s degree in human development and psychology from Harvard University. She also is a certified Integral Coach through New Ventures West and a licensed Immunity to Change facilitator.

In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, large vesselswere fashioned from cedar, poplar, and cottonwood trunks.  But how big, how numerous, and how widely dispersed were these canoes?  How far back do they go in time, and how did the introduction of European metal tools influence or alter the construction of these boats?  This talk will suggest preliminary answers to these and related questions.

Event Image NASA’s MMS Mission: Revolutionizing Our Understanding of Magnetic Reconnection
7:30 PM - 8:30 PM

NASA’s Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission launched in March 2015 and placed four identical spacecraft into orbit around Earth to study a little-understood phenomenon called magnetic reconnection. Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental process of nature that happens in charged particles all across our universe. Reconnection occurs when magnetic field lines meet and reconnect in a different configuration, releasing a gigantic burst of energy in the process. MMS is the only mission currently dedicated to the study of this phenomenon. In this presentation, LASP space physics research scientist Allison Jaynes, will discuss the early results from the mission, and the key role LASP plays in the mission itself. Reconnection on the Sun-ward side of Earth contributes to plasma entry into Earth’s magnetosphere, while reconnection on the night-side triggers the burst of particles that results in auroral displays. Researchers working on MMS are committed to answering questions surrounding the process of reconnection; questions that are fundamental to the nature of our universe, from the distant stars to nuclear fusion technology here on Earth. Come learn how studying our near-Earth environment with missions like MMS makes use of a unique, nearby laboratory to understand the physics of magnetic fields across the universe.

Dr. Duncan, a veteran of many arctic trips to see the northern lights and a member of The Explorers Club, will describe the heroic and tragic stories of two of the most famous polar explorations of all time, including recent discoveries of frozen bodies and ships from the 1845 Franklin Expedition, and modern plans to repeat the Nansen expedition of 1892.

Event Image Two Epic Polar Explorers...Disaster and Success by Dr. Doug Duncan
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

The stories of Sir John Franklin and Fridtjof Nansen.

One was the first Ph.D. polar explorer, the first to use electric lights on a ship, and a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. As well as the owner of one of the finest mustaches any man has worn. The other led a Titanic sized, slow motion disaster: All the men lost in the frozen north, bodies found frozen a century later, and lamented until today in mournful song.

Event Image Edison and the Eclipse that Enlightened America
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

On July 29, 1878, a total solar eclipse crossed Colorado and Wyoming. The astronomical event lured many of the era’s great scientists to the western frontier because it offered a rare opportunity to solve longstanding riddles of the sun and solar system. Based on research for his new book AMERICAN ECLIPSE, Boulder author David Baron tells the tale of this influential event in American science and shares the stories of some remarkable people who witnessed it. Among the prominent eclipse chasers in 1878 were Vassar astronomer Maria Mitchell, who headed an all-female expedition to Denver to show what women could do in science, and a young Thomas Edison, who observed the eclipse in Wyoming immediately after devising the phonograph and just before he lit the world with his incandescent lamp.

Real Colors
1:00 PM - 3:30 PM

For centuries, people have searched for ways to peek into the human mind. The Greek philosopher, scientist and physician, Hippocrates wrote that all human beings could be divided into four distinct personality types. Real Colors is an instrument based on the more modern Temperament theories developed by David Keirsey. It is designed to help people recognize, accept, learn to value and understand human behaviors to improve empathy and communication in the workplace.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify their top two colors and understand how their style drives behavior
  • Understand how their natural style supports and impacts their interactions with others
  • Learn how to “speak in the language of the listener and listen in the language of the speaker”
  • Compare the four colors to understand their needs, values, strengths, and joys

Who Should Attend

This course is intended for individuals at all levels of the organization interested in understanding their temperament and how to effectively collaborate, communicate, and empower diverse personalities.

Instructors

Lauren Harris, Senior Training and Development Specialist, Organization and Employee Development, Department of Human Resources

Amy Moreno, Senior Training and Development Specialist, Organization and Employee Development, Department of Human Resources

Cost

There is no cost for individuals taking this course through a regularly scheduled seminar offered through Organizational and Employee Development.

Departmental requests for this training will have an assessment fee of $15 per participant.

Crucial Conversations
8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Consider these questions:

Does your department suffer from taboo topics, deference, disagreement, analysis paralysis, information hoarding, office politics, or alienation?  Is your department battling slow productivity or low morale? Are you a supervisor who struggles with having difficult conversations with employees?  Then you, your team, or your department needs Crucial Conversations training.

Crucial Conversations is a two-day course that teaches skills for creating alignment and agreement by fostering open dialogue around high-stakes, emotional, or risky topics – at all levels of the organization.  By learning how to speak and be heard (and encouraging others to do the same), you’ll surface the best ideas, make the highest-quality decisions, and then act on your decisions with unity and commitment.

The CU Boulder Department of Human Resources has teamed up with VitalSmarts to offer this important course to CU Boulder employees. Based on the national best-selling book Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking when the Stakes are High, the Crucial Conversations course teaches participants to speak persuasively, not abrasively; foster teamwork and better decision making; build acceptance rather than resistance; and resolve individual and group disagreements. See the attached document for a detailed description of the course.

Who Should Attend: Crucial Conversations training is appropriate for employees at all levels of the organization. Supervisors, managers, and executive leaders will find the course to be particularly relevant to their work.

Cost: $200 (The course fee includes a Crucial Conversations Toolkit, cue cards for each lesson, a Crucial Conversations model card, a copy of the New York Times bestselling book, Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High, the Crucial Conversations audio companion MP3 download, and a course completion certificate).

(If you were to take this course directly from VitalSmarts, the cost would be $1,395. But because we have certified CU Boulder trainers to deliver the course, we are able to offer it to CU Boulder employees for $200! Don’t miss this opportunity to receive this incredible training that is transforming organizations around the country!)

CU Grow: Conflict Resolution
9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Register

This seminar will provide you conflict resolution techniques.  The premise of our conversation is while conflict is inevitable; resolution is still obtainable.  If conflict is left unresolved, it will typically escalate into something bigger.  We will identify conflict for what it is and what it is not, evaluating situations and issues from multiple perspectives. Then, we will apply conflict resolution strategies, including a framework for navigating difficult conversations.  The objective is to shift our paradigm with conflict and improve the conflict resolutions competence of university managers and leaders.

Help our community prepare for an emergency.

In the event of a large-scale health emergency, CU Boulder in collaboration with Boulder County Public Health will distribute medication to the campus community. Help us practice this process by joining our simulated point of dispensing (POD) exercise on the CU Boulder campus—students, staff, faculty and community members are all welcome!

This emergency preparedness simulation is part of a state-wide Public Health Emergency Dispensing Exercise (PHEDEx). This work allows us to collaborate with community partners to identify gaps and areas for improvement in our emergency planning.  Please help recruit volunteers by forwarding the link to those at CU or in the community who might be interested in helping out.

Event Image Exhibit Closing - Bawdy Bodies: Satires of Unruly Women
11:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Raucous physical humor and over-the-top visual comedy are foregrounded in this exhibition of British caricatures and satires made in the late 1700s. Bawdy humor was frequently deployed in popular images to deprecate the political follies and social foibles of royals, politicians, entertainers and men and women of fashion. This form of humor was especially cutting when used to critique the behavior of accomplished women whose growing prominence and engagement in the public sphere elicited the criticism of commentators and drew the attention of graphic satirists. Featuring a selection of prints from Yale University’s Lewis Walpole Library, Bawdy Bodies offers a view into the manners of an era over two hundred years ago, revealing parallels between the eighteenth-century and today.

This exhibition is generously supported by CU Boulder Student Arts and Cultural Enrichment fees and CU Art Museum members.
