Prof. Konstantinos Ioannidis Presents 'Backwards Looking Modernism: Art in Greece during the 1930's'
Start Date: 4/12/2013Start Time: 5:00 PM
End Date: 4/12/2013End Time: 6:30 PM
Event Description:

Professor Konstantinos Ioannidis
(Department of Theory and History of Art, Athens School of Fine Art)

In public commissions executed during the fascist dictatorship of John Metaxas (1936-40), prominent Greek modernists mixed
Byzantine formal repertory with cubist and fauvist elements to create nationalistic stereotypes. During the past three years, heated debates in Greece regarding the moral implications of the dire financial situation there often recall the intellectual and artistic climate of the 1930s.
