An Evening with Salman Rushdie

End Date: 4/17/2013End Time: 9:30 PM
Event Description

The Distinguished Speakers Board is proud to announce that Sir Salman Rushdie will be coming to CU’s campus to speak at Macky Auditorium on Wednesday, April 17. Salman Rushdie's various written works have won many of the world’s top literary prizes, including the prestigious Booker Prize for his masterwork of magical realism, Midnight’s Children. His novels, which also include The Satanic Verses, The Moor’s Last Sigh, The Ground Beneath Her Feet, and The Enchantress of Florence, are always greeted with anticipation and acclaim. His memoir, Joseph Anton, was published in September 2012. An eclectic writer and public intellectual, Rushdie has also published a heralded collection of essays, Step Across the Line, written the children’s novels Haroun and the Sea of Stories and Luka and the Fire of Life, and served for two years as president of the PEN American Center, the world’s oldest human rights organization.

For his visit to CU, Rushdie will deliver a lecture titled, “Public Event, Private Lives: Literature and Politics in the Modern World.” His lecture will braid together the worlds of literature, politics, and philosophy. Rushdie will speak on the major themes coursing through his writing, his life and our world: freedom of expression, religion, pop culture, current events at home and abroad, East-West relations, and the role of the artist to shape our understanding of the world. After the lecture portion of the event, Rushdie will take part in a question and answer session with members of the audience.

The event will start at 7:30 pm, with doors to Macky Auditorium opening at 6:30 pm. Student tickets will be available for $2.00, starting April 1, at the DSB table on the first floor of the UMC from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm, Monday through Friday.  Community tickets will be available for $15.00 via Macky's website starting March 22. This event is sponsored by the Distinguished Speakers Board, a student-run cost center of CU Student Government. For more information on the event, click here.
