Paul Polak, "Leadership, Engineering and Poverty: What Works When Traditional Approaches Fail"
Start Date: 3/4/2013Start Time: 6:00 PM
End Date: 3/4/2013End Time: 7:30 PM
Event Description:
Dr. Paul Polak will discuss social entrepreneurship in this leadership seminar and Q&A session at 6 p.m. March 4 in the Math 100 Auditorium.

Polak is author of "Out of Poverty: What Works When Traditional Methods Fail" and co-founder and CEO of Windhorse International, a for-profit social venture addressing how companies design, price, market and distribute products for the world's 2.6 billion customers living on less than $2 per day. Prior to launching Windhorse, Polak started nonprofits D-Rev and International Development Enterprises (IDE) to develop solutions that harness the power of markets and attack poverty at its roots. The work of these entities has ended poverty for an estimated 19 million of the world's poorest people.

Polak has received a variety of honors recognizing his entrepreneurial spirit and his focus on benefiting humanity through technology. In 2009, he was named one of the world's "Brave Thinkers" by Atlantic Monthly, along with Barack Obama and Steve Jobs. His next book, "The Business Solution to Poverty: Designing Products and Services for 3 Billion New Consumers," will be published by Berrett-Koehler later this year.

Sponsored by the Engineering Leadership Program, the Newton Chair in Leadership, the Center for Education on Social Responsibility (CESR) at the Leeds School of Business, the Engineering Management Program, and the Engineering Quadrangle.

Students enrolled in the Engineering Leadership Program can include this event as a leadership seminar in their leadership portfolio. For more information, visit
