Event Description
FROM CHERRY BLOSSOMS TO SNOW GARDENS features woodblock prints by famed ukiyo-e masters of the 19th century including Utagawa Hiroshige, Utagawa Kunisada, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, and Katsushika Hokusai. These artists documented the everyday life of Edo (present day Tokyo) through vibrant images of landscape, travel, commerce, and leisure. Among the many subjects represented in FROM CHERRY BLOSSOMS TO SNOW GARDENS are sumo wrestlers, logging and bamboo harvesting, images of the passing seasons, fireworks, and boating. Also included are selections from Hiroshige’s series “Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido,” “One Hundred Views of Famous Places in Edo,” and “Fashionable Genji.” The exhibition also features twentieth century Japanese prints by artists including Shiro Ikegawa, Hashiguchi Goyō, Kaoru Kawano, and Kiyoshi Saito. Also on view are examples of popular 20th century Japanese print culture including selections of mid-century Chiyogami prints as well as prints that reflect both the evolution and continuity of Japanese visual narratives.
