Event Description
Attend a talk by Yasmin Kafai, professor of Learning Sciences, University of Pennsylvania and a pioneer in research on electronic gaming, learning and gender. Yasmin Kafai has been instrumental in developing creative digital activities that children love and online learning communities. She is a developer of Scratch, a programming language that makes it easy for children to create interactive stories, animations, games, music and art – and share their creations on the web. Visit: http://scratch.mit.edu.
She will discuss the online Scratch community (which has grown to showcase almost three million child-developed stories, animations, games, music and art from around the world with 800,000 registered members and 230,000 project creators) and eCrafting Circles (a community supporting the Lilypad Arduino microcontroller in e-textiles). Visit: http://ecrafting.org/
Yasmin Kafai has written several gender and technology-related studies including the book “Beyond Barbie and Mortal Kombat: New Perspectives on Gender and Gaming.” She received her doctorate from Harvard University while working with Seymour Papert at the MIT Media Laboratory and examines technology designs and cultures through the lens of constructionist theory. |
